I've found this funny film on Youtube. I think it's originally made by some UCLA Korean students to celebrate the Korean Night on 2003. It's a about this new freshman korean student eats a piece of rotten Kimchi (which does not make any sense as Kim-Chi never goes bad.. anyway) and turns into superhero... whom people call as 'Fobman.' I encourage to watch it. It's quite delightful and sweet. =)
About The Film
One day, Steve Ahn happened to buy a HD Digital Camcorder from Canon website with this unbelievable offer, 'Get 50% off on entire purchase when you buy 8 by 10 Photo Paper Pack.' The camcorder was delivered fine with the offer, but Steve had no idea what to shoot with it. Dusts were falling on its box everyday, and it was forgotten from Steve's memory. But one day, an inspiration came...
Hi, my name is Steve Ahn. I'm a story artist from Los Angeles, California. Through this my very first short documentary, 'meet the FOB,' I would like to introduce to you, a life of a F.O.B in America. My friends used to call me a 'fob' when I first came to America in 1996 from Korea. I was a freshman in high school back then; my identity was just forced to be a fob by people around me without my choice or plan. The term, 'fob' never could explain to anyone, who I truly am and what precious potentials I have inside. It only identified me as an ESL student in an unfamiliar outfit. It somehow caused my teenager life to become a shy person, to lose confidnce in front of people, and to wander around KoreaTown without any hope or dream.
After 12 years, I have become an animation artist, working as a storyboard artist for animated TV shows in Hollywood. And these dreams became a reality for me because I broke out of my FOB life and pursuited my American dream. Now when I look back at my teenager life, I wonder why I felt so afraid to break out of the Fob imprisonment, and achieve my dream in America. Even though I felt the impossiblity then, it was not so bad after all.
When I see Korean Teenagers wandering around the streets of Korea-town in Los Angeles, I feel great sympathy. Especially to those kids who can't see how great they are, and what kind of great future is awaiting for them. In the process of making this film, I interviewed several Korean Teenagers from Korea-town, and my American friends from my work place to capture the story of a Fob life in this land of Opportunity, America..
I hope this film brings you an inspiration and motivation in your beautiful life, and an unique perspective view toward Fobs.
Do you know F.O.B?
