Laney Briggs was no damsel in distress heroine. As the deputy sheriff of a small town, she could handle herself and didn’t need a man to coddle her every step of the way. That is, until all hell broke loose in Pistol Rock and Laney was thrown into the middle of the investigation none other than her ex himself was working on. What ensued was an action-packed and semi-steamy adventure with danger lurking around every corner.

I’m always a fan of the tough heroines, so I took to Laney right away. She has sass, pride, and a tough-as-nails exterior that was admirable and lovable. There was a lot going on here, with an interwoven web of whodunits that keeps the reader guessing right up to the end. Poisoned cows, dead bodies, drool-inducing males, threats on her life, and questionable locals had Laney spinning in circles while sweltering her way through her work days, but Gunner was there at every step of the way to attempt to steer her in the right direction…right to his arms. Laney’s fiancé? Well, yeah, she sees him as the safe bet sure thing, so he was a charmer. I wasn’t a fan of his just because Gunner kind of stole the show with his macho ranger ways. Their past was a painful one, and one that gave me pause when it came to Gunner being my choice for our heroine, but there’s something to be said for all that history.

Laney really faced a lot of trauma as she and her crew waded their way through the evidence trails, and damn she was one tough cookie. I wished she hadn’t been on the receiving end of so much of the fallout and had more opportunities to just kick some ass, because she went through some moments where she took things a little too well as far as I was concerned. But I loved that she didn’t let anything get her down and I loved her attitude!

As for the romance, there was really good chemistry between Laney and Gunner, but we don’t get to see much of it. There are a few semi-steamy scenes with Laney’s relationships as the story plays out, but the story revolved mainly around the crime solving and the drama surrounding her as a result. I did enjoy the humor that Laney and Gunner brought to the table though, as their banter and shared quips had me laughing quite a bit. Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable read, and a definite yes for fans of the romantic suspense genre!

When I was asked to review this novel I just couldn't wait to dive in. The whole cowboy or western thing isn't usually my cup of tea but I decided to go outside of my reading comfort zone this time. And for good reason! Did you read that summary?!? Yeah ... you and I both know that you want to know more about Gunner Wilson. Sweet baby Jesus. I'm telling you ... you want to know more about Gunner Wilson.

This is the first novel that I've read by Jodi Linton and it probably won't be the last. It was really well written ... I didn't find any boring sections, nothing long winded or anything like that. I also really liked how established the story was ... you know those kinds ... there's no warming up period, just first paragraph and BOOM! already some action going on.

That being said ... I also felt a bit overwhelmed in the beginning. There were so many characters to learn and they all played a vital part in the story. I did find myself having a hard time at first keeping up with everyone. Now, that goes away once you're fully into the story but it was a bit much at first.

I've read ... hundreds of books. I don't even know how many. Tons. A crap ton. That's more than a ton, right? Well ... because of that, I can sometimes pick out the ending to novels and movies. Strike that. Not sometimes ... most of the time. And unfortunately, that was the case with Pretty Reckless. Oh, I hoped that I was wrong during the whole novel but in the end, I wasn't. But I will say this ... I may have known the outcome of the novel but the ride to get there was pretty awesome. I'll definitely read another one by Linton in the future and I'm kinda excited to see what happens in the next installment.
Have you ever heard a Laneyism such as "That wink was deadlier than a Krispy Kreme donut to a woman's waistline" if not then you really should read this delightful romance, suspense, mystery, and sometimes coffee sputtering humour as Deputy Laney Briggs comes out with her very own brand of humour.
Laney is a person that I would love to have as a friend, loyal and sincere and as straight shooting as they come, life has thrown her some curve balks but she has thrown them straight back and is going along wonderfully until Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson decides to enter her life again.
Now Gunner there's a man for you a Texas Ranger, and from the first " He'd cocked his black cowboy hat to the side and stuffed his hands into the back pockets of tight Wranglers, stretching the black t-shirt round his big biceps. That damm black rattlesnake rippled along the hard muscles of his right forearm..." You are in his corner, as the story progresses I know that my feelings went up and down as I found out their history, but the one thing you never doubted was his love.
All the secondary characters are wonderful and add such a depth to the story and there are far too many to go into here suffice to say that Laney has Laneyisms for most of them and I love these short pithy descriptions.
This is the first in a series and I certainly hope we get to see more of Laney and Gunner and the rest of the crew at a Pistol Rock as this is one of the most entertaining books I've read in a while.
